The Carmelite Charism Part 3: The Meaning of the word “Carmel”
Carmelites are garden dwellers or paradise dwellers. It is not just about living on a beautiful mountain, but the beauty of the mountain reminds the Carmelite of his being a garden dweller in a specific way. The Carmelite wants to dwell in the paradise where the Son of God dwelt. Jesus dwelt in the womb of Mary. So the Carmelite Monks wants to dwell in the paradise of God.
God wanted His own heaven on earth. He created His Mother as the place where he would dwell. By way of grace, Mary is the most graced creature that God could create since she was full of grace. The garden of God is the Heart of Mary. The Carmelite dwells in Mary’s Heart where he hopes to reach union with God through Mary.
In Mary is a new world of divine treasures that God has placed there for all Christians. Mary is the spouse of the Holy Spirit. The Carmelite wishes to reach union with God by receiving all the graces that the Holy Spirit wishes to give the soul through Mary.
